Suspension Setup
01/29/09 at 12:06:06

I am a novice rider, but I am in love with everything about my hobby. I have a '06 450R and I have a few mods to it including ASR a-arms. My front shocks are stock, I was wondering how much the springs should be tightened/loosened for woods riding. Last I was out, I felt like it was a little rough. I know I can loosen them up by the locknuts on top of the spring, but will that take the life out of the shock quicker (having the spring more loose)? Also, maintenance on there shocks, do I ever have to let air out or anything occasionally? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forums!

On your shocks, the springs should have only 1/8 inch of preload. In other words put the quad on a stand with the front wheels off the ground, you should adjust the springs to have only 1/8th inch of compression. You should never have to let the gas out of the shocks, after many years of hard riding and jumping they may need new oil and recharged.

Ok, so I want a 1/8' from the top of the threads down to the top of the spring, or 1/8' from the bottom of the threads to the top of the spring? Thanks a bunch!

With the quad on a stand, loosen the jamb nuts completely away from the springs, then re tighten them to compress the spring only 1/8".

Awesome! Thanks a lot for your help. Mine were set up a more than half way down the threads. Probably about an inch or more. They were waaaaay too stiff.
